J. R. R. Tolkien, devout Catholic, Oxford don, husband, dad, and Pope's man, called the work of the imagination the "subcreation" of the created (humans). Rarely have I seen a vision of subcreation on the silver screen to equal (and satisfy the child in me) that of the brothers Conran, "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" [2004]. If you find the opportunity, I highly recommend it. It is so choice. [HT: last two sentences, Ferris Bueller] The kicker is that Paltrow, Jolie, and Law did the entire thing in front of blue screen.

Neat. Some of this (like, the aircraft and the robots) seems derivative of Laputa: Castle in the Sky, another highly recommended exemplar of subcreation. Sampler.
I looked at the "sampler", Porthos. It looks like something I'll try to see. Thanks for the lead.
Hey, any Miyazaki movie is a good bet for subcreation encounters, but especially:
Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke
Naoshika of the Valley of the Wind (?)
Laputa: Castle in the Sky

Thanks, Porthos. My youngest has Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. The retro look of Laputa draws my interest; Amazon here I come.
