I also thank thee for all the links you provided for the Dejohnette pieces and for the You Tube embed.

Since I don't want to mess up your edit (and possibly make the picture disappear) I'll add my commentary here.

I first saw the Immaculate Conception painting in a black & white reproduction in a book by Jarislov (?) Pelikan called Mary through the Ages. (Wonderful book, by the way.) I just saw it and said, Wow! No profound thoughts. I wanted to get it in color and frame it, but first I wanted to track it down on the Internet and get a better look. This was all about 5 years ago, I think. I still haven't acquired a paper reproduction but hope to someday.

I don't know much about the painting. I wonder if it might not be modelled on Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Note that the painting is biblical: "A woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of (twelve?) stars upon her head."

I really can't think of anything profound to say here, um . . . the painting kind of speaks for itself. I like the clouds, the sun in the background. Freshness, creation, mystery, fruitfulness, pregnancy. I like the earth grounding, with the polis off there in the background, suggesting that . . . I don't know-- that maybe that this is not pie in the sky stuff, that Mary is queen of Heaven AND Earth. It's a picture of beauty and piety and tranquility and intelligence, without sugary stuff, without Catholic kitsch.

How about you? What thoughts does it give either of you?Porthoshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15068816321548529889noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37222179.post-1163809486770192892006-11-17T20:24:00.000-04:002006-11-17T20:24:00.000-04:00You mean my "Look!
